Despite all the awful things they did, viewers wanted more. Their adventures remained as compelling as ever as fans watched them fight with, support, and sacrifice for one another. At the center of The Originals was the idea that the Mikaelson siblings had sworn to be there for each other "always and forever.
Below, we shed some light on things you might have missed about the Originals and their inner circle. When the Originals were first mentioned in the second season of The Vampire Diaries , they were introduced slowly. First viewers met Elijah, then Klaus. In season 3, Rebekah came to Mystic Falls. And fans got a brief glimpse at doomed youngest brother, Henrik, too. There was a seventh Mikaelson sibling as well.
He was also the middle sibling — Freya, Finn, and Elijah were older than him, while Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik were younger. It was the untimely passing of youngest sibling Henrik at the hands of a werewolf that motivated the Mikaelson parents to turn their children into vampires. Their intention was to protect their children, although they got much more than they bargained for.
Much is made of the Originals' advanced age. They have existed for over a thousand years as a result of their vampirism and are considered the most powerful creatures on earth. That dubious honor went to Silas and Amara. Silas betrayed Qetsiyah and took the elixir with the woman he truly loved: her handmaiden, Amara. This made Silas and Amara the first immortals years before the Originals were born.
Qetsiyah took her revenge on the couple by sealing Silas in a tomb and making Amara the anchor to The Other Side, a holding area for deceased supernatural creatures. As the anchor, Amara felt every supernatural being cross to the Other Side.
The pair lived their separate plights for over years before they were finally set free. His mother placed a curse on Klaus to repress the werewolf in him. Klaus required some very specific ingredients to break the spell, which delayed his success for centuries. Elijah was obsessively loyal to his siblings, and especially his brother, Klaus. While his relationship with Klaus was codependent and unhealthy, Elijah nonetheless always reunited with him, hoping to push and prod Klaus towards redemption.
Yet, through the centuries there were several points at which Elijah got so frustrated with Klaus that he all but gave up on his brother. He also threatened to leave Klaus permanently and became estranged from him after Klaus dispatched his lovers.
At these times, Elijah seemed determined to let go of his allegiance towards his brother. In the end, though, the pair always reconcile, and Elijah resumes his role as his Klaus' moral compass. The location gave the show a distinctive look and feel that distinguished it from The Vampire Diaries. Yet, in reality the series was rarely shot on location. Instead, a majority of the series was filmed in the suburbs of Atlanta. What viewers saw on screen was actually a street in Conyers, Georgia dressed to look like the famous area in New Orleans.
Yet, the show did occasionally come to New Orleans. The backdoor pilot for the series that aired during The Vampire Diaries ' fourth season was shot almost entirely in the city, and the show continued to travel to New Orleans for quick shoots through its five seasons.
Fans who also watched The Vampire Diaries know that Klaus and Rebekah spent some quality time in Chicago during the s. And it turns out they almost returned there for their own series.
The producers considered Nashville but ultimately settled on New Orleans. While New Orleans was chosen for practical reasons, it ended up having a strong impact on the series. Its success paved the way for many additional spinoffs on the network.
The success of that series was then followed by Supergirl in which spent its first season on CBS but moved to the CW for season 2 and Legends of Tomorrow in Meanwhile, The Originals has spawned a spinoff of its own. The series brought back characters from The Vampire Diaries as well and continues storylines from both series. She also figured out multiple ways to return to the land of the living in order to correct the mistake she felt she made when she turned her children into monsters.
Despite the substantial amount of magical power Esther wields, however, her sister, Dahlia is an even more impressive witch. She figured out how to enhance her magic by linking it with others and she also conceived of a way to be somewhat immortal by going into a magically-induced sleep for years while only waking up — and aging — for a single year. This enabled her to live for centuries and eventually meet, and magically challenge, her nieces and nephews in the present day.
On the one hand, it was a great character moment. Klaus finally gave Rebekah her freedom after many lifetimes spent under the thumb of her damaged family.
Rebekah did come back multiple times over the seasons, including for the series finale. Well, kind of, sort of. One of the most important of these is also one of the most biologically human — the ability to procreate.
While vampires are unable to conceive children, werewolves can. Even though Klaus is often dominated by his vampire nature, his werewolf side eliminates infertility that is traditionally part of the vampire condition. Unlike Klaus, whose undead status is open to interpretation, his daughter, Hope, is truly alive. The cure for immortality was first put into play during The Vampire Diaries. Even then, Rebekah expressed a desire to take it.
She had always wanted to be human, to get married, and have a family — opportunities she was denied because she became a vampire.
A new one was created by Damon Salvatore , from parts of the Wickery Bridge which came from the saplings of the original tree. This stake was then stolen by the recently-resurrected Esther and Alaric Saltzman 's dark alter-ego in , the former of whom melted down Alaric's Gilbert ring to make the stake indestructible and prevent it from being burned after an Original was staked with it.
After Esther's death at Klaus' hands in the 11th century, Elijah and Rebekah swore to stick with Niklaus " always and forever. Finn was the first to be daggered in the s and was left neutralized for nine hundred years, while Kol was daggered on multiple occasions and for various lengths of time, including in , in , and again in Rebekah also had a similar fate to Kol and was also daggered on various occasions, including in , , and When his siblings were daggered, he dragged them around in coffins, which he never kept far from wherever he was living.
However, for many centuries, Elijah was the only sibling to escape his wrath, and Klaus led Elijah to believe that he had dropped their incapacitated siblings deep in the ocean where they could never be found.
For this betrayal, Elijah swore revenge on his brother. Over the years, legends began to surround the Original Vampires as their story became lost to history: all vampires knew that they were descended from the first generation of vampires, but they knew next to nothing about them. Only one was actually known at all: Klaus. He was believed, mistakenly, to be the oldest vampire in the world to the few vampires who knew of him, and while many vampires knew of Elijah, he was mistakenly assumed to be a "foot-soldier" or minion of Klaus' and wasn't revealed to be an Original vampire to most, nor was he known to be Klaus' half-brother.
Elijah was, however, serving his own interests: namely, Klaus' destruction in recompense for his lost family. Mikael was also not anonymous in history, but no one knew he was an Original vampire, either, nor did they know his true goal was to slay his step-son Klaus; he was instead infamously known as Mikael the Destroyer, the ancient vampire who hunted vampires.
However, it was Elijah who revealed to the Mystic Falls Gang that the other Original vampires were his siblings. Klaus hunted them down, one by one and he took them from me. It was the latter's death that revealed to many that when an Original vampire is killed, every vampire in their bloodline ie: any vampire they have ever sired dies along with them, as evidenced by Sage and Troy dying just an hour or so after Finn was killed.
Months later, Kol was killed by Jeremy Gilbert in order to finish his Hunter's Mark , as his death would result in the deaths of thousands of vampires who were sired by him.
M for Mikaelson at The Abattoir. As of , the Mikaelson family resides in the French Quarter of New Orleans , Louisiana, where Klaus inadvertently started his own family when it was revealed that his Original hybrid nature being born a werewolf and turned into a vampire by magic allowed him to father a child with the werewolf Hayley Marshall during a one-night stand.
Then Klaus and Hayley reunited in the city after he and Elijah returned there for the first time in over a century to investigate a claim of a potential threat from a witch named Jane-Anne Deveraux.
They were soon joined by Rebekah and began to regain control over the city they had worked to build in the 18th century, with Klaus eventually taking leadership from his surrogate son Marcel Gerard. After an intense war between the five supernatural factions of the city, the Guerrera werewolves , who had been living undercover as humans for decades and who had allied with the French Quarter Coven of witches, staged a coup against the Originals and the vampires and seized control over the city.
Part of the Guerrera's alliance with the witches involved handing over the pregnant Hayley so that they could sacrifice Hayley and Klaus' baby daughter to gain more power for the coven. Fortunately, the child was rescued by her parents, uncle, and surrogate brother, but was ultimately sent away to live with Rebekah after they faked her death to ensure that she would no longer be pursued by their enemies.
While Klaus, Elijah, and Hayley work together to regain control over the Quarter once again, they are forced to fight against their newly-resurrected father in his fight to kill Klaus, as well as their mother and brothers Kol and Finn, all of whom have returned to life by possessing the bodies of witches and who plan to get the three to rejoin their family in mortal bodies.
