Which pool table should i buy

These allow operators to carry out very precise levelling at various points around the slate, to get the best possible results. Folding pool tables are limited to MDF-bed designs, mainly because the weight of a slate bed makes it very difficult to fold the table body. Folding tables usually have retractable legs that fit into the underside of the table, enabling you to slide it up against the wall or under a bed for storage. Most commercial tables take payments in return for game credits.

Here you have three basic options:. Mechanical coin mechs are very basic. You insert the required coins into a slide, which is then pushed into the table. Once the coins have fallen through, the balls are released.

After each ball is potted it goes into the ball drawer where all are eventually collected during the course of the game, until the next coin is inserted. The benefits of mechanical coin mechs include easy maintenance. These are basic pieces of equipment that can be maintained with a few tools and an instruction manual. Easily change your price of play, collect coins or set to freeplay in the space of a few minutes.

Electronic mechs are more modern. Simply insert the coins, push a button and the balls are released. The benefits of electronic units include the opportunity to harvest data on how many games are played, and the ability to take any combination of coins to make up the price of a credit.

You can also easily reprogram the unit to change the credit price, and operation is much quieter than a mechanical mech. However, a power supply either a mains supply or a battery pack is required. Contactless mechs are very new in the world of pool tables, but are perhaps the easiest to operate. Customers simply tap their contactless cards or mobile phones to buy a credit instantly, which automatically releases the balls for one game.

The benefits are plenty. The units are highly programmable, with options for marketing discounts, promo messages and plenty more. And the unit is linked to your bank account, so all takings are deposited directly into your account on a regular basis. A well built table will have a heavy solid frame supporting the slate bed. Look for a frame that is at least one and a half inches in thickness and is made from either solid wood, plywood, or even better an engineered sandwich board, which is constructed from a three layer laminate of two types of manufactured woods. It is also important to know how the table is fastened together.

Tables that use wood screws, or staples to hold the frame together are not durable and are not designed to be taken apart once originally assembled. The frame will lose its integrity after repeated re-assembly. One easy test is to bump the table with your hip, if it sways walk away.

Brazilian or Italian slate is the best. A slate bed is the only way to be sure you have a level and consistent playing surface for playing pool. Items such as the billiard cloth, rail rubbers and pockets can all wear out over time. With heavy use, billiard cloth has a life expectancy of 2 or 3 years and should be changed after 8 to 10 years with infrequent use. Each piece can then be adjusted by driving hardwood wedges between the frame and slate thus allowing the installer to get an accurate level on all points of the table. When a proper assembly is completed the 3 slates will be on the same plane and will be level within.

The 3-pc. The seams will then be sealed with a torch and bee's wax to ensure a smooth play surface with no obstructions. The last thing to consider when it comes to the slate is the style of slate. There are three types of 3-pc. Framed Slate 3-pc. Unframed Slate 3-pc. Slate Liner. Framed slate is always the preferred style. The MDF, plywood, or particle board framing will be attached to the slate with glue, screws or both on a framed slate pool table.

This allows for the cloth to be stapled on as opposed to gluing as would have to be done on an unframed slate pool table. Unframed slate, which usually measures 1" thick or less, is not necessarily a bad design but as the name implies it is not designed with any framing. The frame still acts as the main support for the slate but the felt must then be attached to the slate with an adhesive which has a few downsides. Depending on the installer, if the adhesive is not applied correctly obstructions in the play surface can arise from lumps of glue beneath the felt causing the pool balls to roll off.

This design still allows for the felt to be attached to the slate with staples but as you can see in the picture below, the MDF liner will sag over time. This design of table offers the worst playability of the three types of slate as when the liner sags so does the slate causing the seams to slip and extrude from the play surface.

Every manufacturer offers a variety of stain, finish and wood options. There are obviously thousands of combinations but you can never go wrong with a solid mahogany or oak design.

These are not the only recommended woods but they are very popular and are fairly hard woods which prevent gouges and scratches. Keep in mind that dark finishes, such as Traditional Mahogany, show scratches much more easily than the lighter finishes like Oak and Honey.

The most durable finish is undoubtedly a formica finish, which is normally found on commercial style pool tables. With modern technology, formica finishes can offer a beautiful wood grain look with the durability of a standard kitchen counter, almost impossible to dent or scratch.
