Unfortunately, a Haunter living in the tower paralyzed Charmander by using Lick , forcing Ash to recall it. Charmander's next chance to shine came when Ash chose him to go up against Primeape , who had evolved from a harmless Mankey. After enduring a brutal beating at Primeape's hands, Charmander learned Rage which gave it the opportunity to knock Primeape out after unleashing a powerful Flamethrower , which finally enabled Ash to capture it.
Charmander knocked Weepinbell out with a Skull Bash , giving Ash the win, but Charmander lost after battling Erika's Gloom due to the fact that the stench Gloom gave off was so disgusting that it caused Charmander to hold its nose before fainting in disbelief.
Although the battle was suspended due to Team Rocket attacking the Gym and setting it on fire, Ash eventually won the Rainbow Badge after saving Gloom's life. Despite the fight not going in Charmander's favor at the beginning, it was eventually able to beat Koga's Golbat thanks to a combination of Ember and Fire Spin that gave Ash the Soul Badge.
Charmander was chosen to stop a group of rampaging Exeggutor. After it did so, Ash and the team were surprised when it evolved into Charmeleon. Unfortunately, Charmander's happy personality and loyalty disappeared upon it evolving into Charmeleon , the reason being that Charmeleon's own skill level excelled that of Ash's and as such, it disrespected him. During a practice battle in which Ash sought to help a Paras Cassandra owned evolve into a Parasect , it responded by going against Ash's orders and ruthlessly attacked the Paras, causing it to flee in tears.
Ash was about to reprimand Charmeleon, but Charmeleon used a Flamethrower on him before turning on Brock and Misty , the former of whom commented that Charmeleon was way out of control. Luckily, though, Pikachu intervened and knocked Charmeleon out with a Thunderbolt , enabling Ash to recall it. It orders Aerodactyl to fight, but it refuses while it insulted Charmeleon long enough to cause him to stomp its feet angrily and roars to evolve into a Charizard as everyone sees it evolved and a close-up of Charizard finally unleashes its Flamethrower and wants to have revenge against Aerodactyl for insulting him instead of rescuing Ash from its grasp.
It did its best to defeat the Aerodactyl by chasing it but accidentally used Flamethrower on Ash before Jigglypuff puts them to sleep using Sing while Charizard rescues Ash before falling into sleep itself. Upon being released from its Ball, it accidentally simply shot out flames onto Ash again, and still ignored his orders. However, it actually battled against other Fire-types.
In Riddle Me This! In Volcanic Panic! With that, it helps stop the lava from flowing while being aided by Brock's Onix and Geodude and Ash's Pikachu while cooling off from Misty's Staryu and Ash's Squirtle. After they stopped the lava from flowing, both Charizard and Magmar are glaring into each other's eyes and wanted to test their strength, which leads them to battle at the top of the volcano.
He listened to Ash in his battle against Magmar as both are equally matched when unleashing their Flamethrower. Charizard also managed to block and threw Magmar's powerful Fire Blast away, making Magmar knock him out with Skull Bash. Charizard retaliates the same way, and both are seen grabbing each other hands. Magmar manages to grab and throw Charizard into the volcano. However, Charizard survives after getting thrown into the volcano as it flies with Magmar into the sky, much to Blaine's horrible shock, allowing Ash to show Charizard its Submission in mid-air to make Magmar dizzy, and throws it with Seismic Toss back into the volcano in an explosion, making Ash win the battle when Magmar finally passed out and collapsed to the ground after barely surviving Charizard's Seismic Toss.
When Ash tries to return Charizard to his Ball, Charizard scorches him with its Flamethrower, finally showing his disobedience to him again while unleashing most of its Flamethrower into the sky. He also battled Ritchie's Charmander , and easily crushed it. Charizard retained its disobedience in the episode, Pallet Party Panic!
After Pidgeotto was hit from Arbok's Poison Sting, Ash releases it to save Pikachu but it fails and it does not listen when it looked at the bunch of fruits. However, Team Rocket managed to throw bombs throughout Pallet Town until they destroyed the fruits that Charizard wanted to eat causing the former to get enraged. When Team Rocket continues to throw bombs at Charizard, it retaliates by using its wings to whack the bombs back at Team Rocket, leaving them to scream as the balloon explodes, causing them to blast off again.
Charizard continues to get out of control by firing its Flamethrower, despite Ash's attempts to put it back to its Poke Ball due to being hit with its Flamethrower on his face.
It defeated a trainer's Tauros in one hit, only to go on a rampage that was contained by Elite Four member Lorelei. It also used Flamethrower on Ash while it was trying to make a sled to use against Danny. Ash dodged somehow , and the Flamethrower made the perfect sled, helping Ash win the round. As he won the round, Charizard embarrassed Ash. After Team Rocket is blasted off by Scyther's Skull Bash, Charizard and Scyther finally set their differences and return to their respective territory.
A turning point in their relationship came when Ash chose Charizard to battle Tad's Poliwrath. After Charizard's refusal to obey him cost Ash the match and went on another rampage, Charizard was frozen by Poliwrath's Ice Beam , leaving its tail flame on the verge of going out again because of its frozen body.
Throughout the night, Ash resolved to keep Charizard warm, rubbing it with his hands to provide heat in the form of friction, which risked rubbing his hands raw. Before the night ended, Ash told that he only wanted to be good enough for it and reminded Charizard of how long they had been together since Charizard was a Charmander, which Charizard recollected as it remembered how Ash saved its life as a Charmander and realizes how badly it treated its trainer after seeing how much Ash deeply cares for it.
After seeing his efforts to save it from certain death, Charizard's loyalty to Ash returned in full force; the best part of Charmander's pre-evolved personality was back. In the end, their Dragon Rages collided. Although Dragonite was injured by the explosion, Charizard fainted and Dragonite still had enough energy to defeat Ash's Squirtle and Tauros before finally being defeated by Pikachu.
Things ultimately changed when they reached Charicific Valley. The two of them soon hear about Charicific Valley, a natural sanctuary for wild Charizard, so they decide to visit it. After constantly fighting and losing, Ash and Charizard are ultimately kicked out of the Valley by Liza, who also forbade them to come back.
When Charizard later helped defeat Team Rocket, Liza acknowledged his power and let it join her group. At that moment, Ash was faced with an emotional decision — he would either have to leave his Charizard with his friends and let it become stronger, or take it with him and make it unhappy. Remembering everything they experienced together, Ash decided that it was for the best that Charizard stayed in the Valley.
You can check out the scene for yourselves:. Still, as it evolved, it grew stronger and it disrespected Ash because it thought he was too weak to train it; this was especially emphasized after the evolution into Charizard, which happened rather quickly. If you add the fact that Charizard was stubborn on its own and that it only ever wanted strong er opponents, you have a rather tricky personality to deal with. It just thought itself far superior to Ash to be trained by him.
Charizard finally obeyed Ash after he takes cares of it all night in order to thaw it out. It seems that Charizard finally understood that Ash cared for it a lot and from that point on the two battled together as a team. Some people speculate that since Ash did not have enough badges he was not able to control Charizard. In the video games, if a Pokemon obtained in a trade is at a high level that exceeds the limits of the badges a trainer has on hand it will refuse to obey them.
Not to mention in the Pokemon League, Charizard flat out refused to listen to Ash. Despite having all 8 badges and making it to the fifth round of the tournament, Charizard took a nap.
In the video games it is stated that anyone with 8 badges can command a Pokemon of ANY level without fail. In any case, its refusal to battle resulted in one of the most shocking disappointments of any child born in the 90s: Ash lost his first Pokemon League Tournament. This is why the Pokemon game mechanics do not blend so well with some of the things seen in the anime.
It appears that a Pokemon will only obey its trainer in the show if it trusts the trainer and some Pokemon will only obey if they deem their trainer worthy of commanding them. Overall, it seemed that Charmander began to look at Ash the same way it finally saw Damian for what he truly was: a trainer who only cared about it just because it was strong. Although Ash cared for all of his Pokemon, making Charmander battle multiple times reaching its breaking point is probably why Charmander stopped obeying him after evolution.
Need more proof? After evolving, the first thing Charmeleon did when Ash hugged it was use a Flamethrower that nearly burned part of his head! Charizard has used its Flamethrower on Ash multiple times in the series whenever it felt that Ash was getting on its nerves. After finally obeying Ash, Charizard would use his Flamethrower as a greeting when returning from its training in the Charicific Valley. Charizard seeing how much Ash cared for it, even it always disrespected him, finally decided to listen to him.
As explained in the anime episode 44, Charmeleon became disobedient to Ash because he was too low leveled the old lady in that episode told Ash this herself. At the time, he didn't have all the gym badges, only a few. In episode 46, Charmeleon evolved but still doesn't listen to Ash because Charizard is now even higher leveled. At the last gym where it was Charizard vs Magmar, Charizard found Magmar to be a worthy opponent and that's when Charizard listened to Ash but stops listening to him afterward.
Then they went to the Charizard mountain where Ash left Charizard there to train and that's the story of Charizard. You have to look at this from a certain point of view, especially when taking the badges and their obedience into account. The first thing to note is to look at badges that come with an obedience effect, the Cascade, Rainbow, Marsh, and Earth Badges, none of them were won under their rightful means.
Misty's sisters were just giving badges away and when Ash actually battled Misty for it, the battle didn't finish but Ash got the badge for blowing up Team Rocket. Then the Marsh Badge which came before Rainbow in the anime , Ash was defeated by the gym leader fair and square and in his 3rd attempt, the battle was more of a forfeit due to Kadabra laughing with Sabrina so that wasn't a victory that showed prowess as a trainer.
Then the Rainbow badge, that battle also did not finish as Team Rocket stopped that battle mid-way and then Ash goes into the flaming gym and saves Gloom and thus receives the badge so again Ash didn't defeat the gym leader and earn it. Then the Earth badge, Ash didn't even battle the true gym leader, he battled Team Rocket who were more of stand-ins than the actual leaders. Yeah, they used some of Giovanni's pokemon but they were not actual leaders and thus Ash didn't even win the Earth badge under its rightful means.
This can show that the badges go beyond just receiving them. Like a leader can just say "here you go" and drop it in your pocket, that doesn't mean you showed your ability as a trainer. Ash sends out Charmeleon and thinks of Charmeleon's mindset, he's thinking "I'm evolved, I'm powerful, let's do this" he even looks ready to battle.
But what's the first thing Ash tells him? ANY chance Ash had at controlling Charmeleon was gone right there. Charmeleon looks ready but once Ash tells it to lose, that's when Charmeleon looks pissed and glares at Ash then goes on a rampage. Even further in the episode, Ash shows no control, he just shows weakness and does nothing to stop or control Charmeleon. Pikachu is the one who has to step in and stop him. The final thing to note is that Charmander had a previous owner, Damian so technically it's a "traded" pokemon which have a higher rate of disobedience.
Oak saying about Charmander: you should raise him patiently. In other words, the game states it's not easy to raise Charmander and needs a lot of patience to raise it well of course that in the game mechanics, it's less effective than in the anime. In the anime, Ash's Charmander is found abandoned by Damien, saying that "but that puny thing was so weak it couldn't even beat the weakest opponent.
Oak in the game.
